✦ Synopsis

niches in the iron oxide pigments industry. Mr Lu Swan (of Florida Coastal Colors, based in Melbourne, FL) spoke about "regenerated iron oxide" that is extracted from saturated steel pickling liquor. Roughly speaking, a pickling line designed to clean 900,000 tonnes/y of steel with hydrochloric acid will generate aqueous ferrous chloride that can be converted into 4500 tonnes/y of "regenerated iron oxide." A joint venture between Bailey Engineers Inc (of Canonsburg, PA) and PVS Chemicals (of Detroit, MI) supplies "spray-roasted regenerated iron oxide" to Florida Coastal Colors for blending with imported Chinese pigments. The colour-matched blends are then marketed for colouring cement, concrete paving slabs, woodand bark-chip mulches, etc. Mr Robert Hedin (of Iron Oxide Recovery Inc, based in Pittsburgh, PA) described his company's patented technology for the manufacture of pigment-grade iron oxide from the drainage waters of abandoned coal-mines in southwestern Pennsylvania. The iron oxide is used in the EnvironOxide range of brown pigments, with red, yellow or blue undertones, marketed by Hoover Color Corp (of Hiwassee, VA).

Papers on pigment processing were presented by Mr Philip Chen (of Synergy Pigments, based in Shanghai) and by Mr Harry Way (of Netzsch, headquartered in Hanau, Germany). The supply of pigments in granule form is becoming increasingly popular for iron oxide and for other types of pigment, the main advantages over powder form being the minimisation of dust in the working environment and better flowability. Mr Chen noted that flowability depends on the shape and size of the granules. The lower the angle of repose for a pile of granules, the better the flowability. He also described the Tao method -essentially measuring the resistance to impact introduced by blowing air -for assessing the mechanical strength of pigment granules. The higher the mechanical strength, the better the flowability. But if this factor is too high, then it will be difficult to achieve good dispersion of the pigment, with an adverse effect on tinting strength and on the general appearance of the pigmented product. Mr Way discussed the use of bead mills for grinding and dispersing
