✦ Synopsis
Evolving factor analysis (EFA) is a promising multivariate technique for model-free computational resolution of overlapping chromatographic peaks when a multi-channel detector is available. Most applications of EFA in chromatography have involved simultaneous UV-visible detection at several wavelengths. This study examines the feasibility of EFA applied to data from gas chromatography/mass spectrometry (CCWS) where there is a very large number of detection channels (nominal masses) and, importantly, where there is a high degree of specificity in the spectra, even for related compounds which most multi-channel spectroscopic techniques cannot effectively distinguish. Potential problems caused by noise and spectral distortion from scanning analysers are addressed and finally the potential applications of GC/MS/EFA are discussed.
