A Belgian coal (Beringen) has been used in a fundamental study of the changes in pore structure and active surface area during hydrogenation. The coal was devolatilized under N, and then hydrogenated at constant temperature up to various conversion yields. Reactivities of the chars were determined b

β¦ Synopsis
Experimental results are presented for pore structure evolution in high-ash char during activation with COZ, H,O and air. Surface areas and pore size distributions of the char at various activation times are reported. It is shown that activation with H,O results in the most surface area and micropore volume, and air the least.

Measurements of porosity and of reactivity to CO? have been made on chars by pyrolyzing three British bituminous coals of medium rank (Markham Main, Manvers Barnborough, and Manvers Wath). The porosity measurements were made by gravimetric adsorption of CO, at 195 K. Resulting isotherms were analyse
The effects of oxidation of activated carbons are studied by means of high-pressure methane adsorption. Decreases in amounts adsorbed and adsorption enthalpies after oxidation are observed. Thermodynamic analysis of adsorption isotherms using the virial-type thermal equation of adsorption is present
