✦ Synopsis

A scheme for the evolution of anaerobic energy-yielding metabolic pathways of the procaryotes is proposed. This proposal is based on the environmental pressures which would have been placed on the early procaryotes and the selective advantages which would have accrued to the procaryotes which developed mechanisms to overcome these pressures. It is assumed that each of the major metabolic types of anaerobic microorganisms existing today is composed of those species which have survived from the corresponding stages in procaryote evolution.
