✦ Synopsis
The reaction responsible for chemi-ion formation in hydrocarbon flames, CH + O-tHCO+ +e-, may require that the CH be in its metastable a 'Z state. Recently measured rate constants for reactions of ground stale CH (X 'II) with various molecules are incompatible with the empirical rate law for chemi-ionization in the acetylene-oxygen atom system. Participation of CH(a %) in cheml-ion formation could explain several unusual features observed previously.
