Abstract
A forbidden transition ^2^P~3/2~β4f (unoccupied) is detected in the Lβabsorption spectra of compounds of rare earth metals Tb and Dy, indicating the presence of an open 4f shell in these compounds. the location of these 4f shells is found to shift towards the highβenergy side when these metals form compounds.
