Abstract

A forbidden transition ^2^P~3/2~–4f (unoccupied) is detected in the L‐absorption spectra of compounds of rare earth metals Tb and Dy, indicating the presence of an open 4f shell in these compounds. the location of these 4f shells is found to shift towards the high‐energy side when these metals form compounds.

Detailed calculations have been performed of multiphonon relaxation rates of optical excitations in Nd-doped LiYF 4 and Pr-doped CsCdBr 3 crystals in the frameworks of the exchange charge model of the crystal fields and rigid ion harmonic models of lattice dynamics. It is shown that the empirical en
