✦ Synopsis
Z)-Urocanic acid (cis-UA), unlike its (E) isomer (trans-UA), undergoes photoisomerization in the presence of nitro blue tetrazolium (NBI ~+) and sodium azide. Evidence is presented that the photoisomerization involves the reversible addition of the azidyl radical to the double bond.
