Fluctuations and odd-even effects in small superfluid systems at finite temperature are investigated by means of the static path plus RPA approximation. A general derivation of this method is presented, which allows a straightforward implementation in statistical ensembles with fixed number parity (

We consider the thermodynamics of the parity effect in a superconducting island. It is shown that the contribution of the order parameter fluctuations to the odd--even energy difference of the island is small. This confirms the mean-field (BCS) picture of the parity effect.
