✦ Synopsis
Evanescent-wave optics in highly turbid media induces peculiar photochemical reactions in polynucleotides. A singularity is observed and ap[,raised experimentally in a quantitative way by irradiation in the UV-C spectral range of dry chromatography paper disks previously impregnated with ribonucleic acid (RNA) solutions, also containing 0.01 to 1.5 M NaC1. Bichromatic transmission photometry of the disks is rased on multiple-light-scattering enhanced absorbance measurements. The calculated bleaching cross section (o'2) of the RNA uracil bas.~:s situated within the penetration depth of the evanescent wave surrounding the cellulose fibres is over 30 times lower than the cross sec ion (o't) corresponding to the uracil residues of the polynucleotide chain segments outside the evanescent-wave domain.
