✦ Synopsis
A new polar-phase PLOT column, PoraPLOT U from Chrompack Inc., was critiqued for its ability to separate various sulfur gases, as well as for its relative reactivity to these gases. The gases for which this column was evaluated include: carbonyl sulfide (COS), hydrogen sulfide (HzS), sulfur dioxide (SOz), methyl mercaptan (MeSH), ethyl mercaptan (EtSH), isopropyl mercaptan (IpSH), carbon disulfide (CSz), dimethyl sulfide (DMS), and dimethyl disulfide (DMDS). If available and suitable for the particular application, a single column in a gas chromatographic system has the often important advantage of simplicity over more complex multi-column systems [l-31. This PoraPLOT U column was examined with both a conventional flame photometric detector (FPD) and the Sievers model 350 sulfur chemiluminescence detector (SCD).
