On-line estimation of ethanol concentration during a fermentation was carried out with a semiconductor gas sensor system using a semipermeable membrane to separate a gas stream from the fermentor broth.

The system has the advantages of low-cost, "in-situ" fast response time (1 min.).

steam sterilization and a relatively Good agreement was found between on-line and offline measurements with fermentation of 25X glucose media using S.uvarum and Z.mobilis.

However, significant deviations occurred with the fermentation of sugar-cane juice, grape-juice and molasses.
