Abstract
A method for calculating the photoelastic constants and strain derivatives of static dielectric constant for silver and thallium halide crystals, which crystallize in NaCl and CsCl structures, respectively, is developed. The shell model formulation, which takes into account the polarizability of positive as well as negative ions and considers also the effect of Lundqvist's threeβbody interaction, is used in the present calculation. The shortβrange overlap repulsive interactions between first and second neighbours as well as the van der Waals dipoleβdipole interactions are also considered in evaluating the shortβrange force parameters which are used for the calculation of the photoelastic constants and the strain derivatives of the dielectric constant. The results are found to compare well with available experimental data.
