In this Communication we report some results of a cur rent investigation to determine the angular limits which should be imposed upon NOAA-6 and -7 satellite advanced very high-resolution radiometer (AVHRR) data used in veg etation assessments. Angular effects exist in the imagery because of the non-Lambertian nature of the ground and the anisotropy of atmospheric scattering. Simulations of antic ipated sensor output over a wheat crop were paralleled by empirical studies of sensor data over vegetated areas in the United States. Conclusions were drawn from both ap proaches regarding practical scan angular limits for data used in operational large-scale crop assessment.

Simulation studies were based on the equations of Slater 1,2 as used by Duggin et al. [3][4][5] The normalized output from each channel of the NOAA-6 and -7 AVHRR was calculated using the expression
