✦ Synopsis

We evaluate an acoustic plane wave transmitted through a rectangular hole in a thick hard screen by applying the method of the Kobayashi potential. First, the wave functions are expressed by Fourier transforms and the problem is reduced to dual integral equations. These equations are solved by using the discontinuous properties of the Weber-Schafheitlin integrals, leading to matrix equations. The matrix elements are given by double infinite integrals and double infinite series, and a discussion is provided on how to compute them precisely. Transmission coefficients are computed for various aperture sizes and screen thicknesses. A part of the results are compared with results obtained by other methods and the agreement is fairly good. Then, a further comparison is made with results of a two-dimensional thick slit and both results are found to have similar tendencies, particularly for a slender rectangular aperture. In addition, diffracted patterns and velocity distributions on the aperture are computed to show the effect of the thickness.
