✦ Synopsis
A proposed, low temperature molten salt thermally activated reserve battery (thermal battery) was investigated using single cell testing techniques. The basic electrochemical system utilized a lithium-aluminum alloy anode, a MoC15 cathode in intimate contact with a powdered graphite current collector, and an immobilized A1C13-NaCI electrolyte (m.p. 152 °C). This electrochemical system is a candidate to replace or complement existing thermal battery systems, all of which operate at much higher temperatures. Optimization of cells with respect to anode, electrolyte, and catholyte composition was investigated. Cell discharge behavior was characterized, defining optimum conditions of temperature and discharge rate to produce maximum available energy density.
