✦ Synopsis

In 1962 and again in 1985, Berlin was chosen as the venue for Eur~ pump's General Assembly, but 1997"s session in June was the flrst to take place in the new reunified city. In preparation for the resum]r tion of its role as Germany "s capital, many urban sectors are undergoing massive redevelopment, earning Berlin the title" The Largest Building Site in Europd'. The organisers of Europump hoped this setting would be seen as a metaphor for the on~ going construction of the House of Europe, and for the spirit of coolr eration at the heart of the General Assembly meetings. The Assembly, hosted this year by the VDMA, was well attended by delegates from 17 countries, which included a strong delegation from the US.
