โฆ Synopsis
NEW PUBLICATIONS EUROPE'S ENVIRONMENT: THE DOBRIS ASSESSMENT edited by David Stanners and Phillippe Bordeau. Office for Official Publications of the European Communities, 676 pp, 55 ECU (excl. VAT) (pbk), ISBN 92 826 5409 5 Based on a detailed and comprehensive state of the environment report for Europe, Europe's Environment; the Dobris Assessmenf is the most detailed and comprehensive review of environmental quality available. The report covers 46 countries from Portugal in the west to the Urals in the east, and from Iceland in the north to Malta in the south. It draws on data from a wide range of sources including UNECE, UNEP, OECD, Council for Europe, IUCN and WHO. After introducing the context and reporting techniques used, it goes on to assess the state of the environment in eight different fields including air, water, soil, nature, wildlife and urban areas. It also describes the pressures which affect the environment and examines the sources of environmental pressure in eight different sectors including industry, energy, transport, agriculture and tourism. It then moves on to analyse what it sees as the 12 most important environmental problems facing Europe, namely climate change, ozone depletion, loss of biodiversity, major accidents, acidification, urban smog, freshwater management, forest degradation, coastal zone management, waste production and management, urban stress and chemical risk. Complemented by a full statistical compendium, the publication of this amount of information in such an accessible format is a momentous achievement indeed.
