The UK Alvey programme of advanced information technology was launched in 1983 to stimulate collaborative IT research projects between industry and academia. Within the programme the Alvey Vision Club has provided a significant focus for work on computer vision and image interpretation. The second annual conference of the Alvey Vision Club was held in September 1986 and selected papers from the meeting were published in the May 1987 of the international journal Image and Vision Computing Approximately 20 of the best papers, all fully refereed, were published in this specially extended issue, co-edited by Professor Keith Baker of Reading University, UK, and Dr Bernard Buxton, of GEC, UK, and the Conference Programme Chairman.
