M arc Chagall, the great twentieth century figurative artist, was asked by John D. Rockefeller, Jr. to create 9 stained glass windows for his family church in Pocantico Hills, New York. When visiting the site before accepting this commission, Chagall gazed up at the mag-nificent Abbey Aldrich Rockefeller Memorial stained glass rose window created by Henri Matisse. The rose window was the last completed work of Matisse before his death in 1954. Chagall turned to Rockefeller and said, "I see that the Master has already been here.
