✦ Synopsis

The polarized Raman spectra of single crystals of cerium sulfate nonahydrate and cerium sulfate nonadeuterate has been obtained between 16 and 300 K. A comparative vibrational study between these compounds and its isomorphous, La2(SO4)3'9(H20) has been carried out. From the study of the vibrational external modes it has been concluded that these compounds exhibit a different vibrational behaviour below 170 K as a consequence of a weak conformational alteration in the water molecules coordinates around the lanthanide ions.
