✦ Synopsis

In this paper, we show a relationship between electronic properties of pregraphitic carbons and the concentration of interstitial atoms of carbon observed by structural X-Rays studies. E.P.K. measurements have been performed on two series of carbons, respectively characterized by a very low (~2%) and a very high (>E%) concentration of interstitial atoms. The samples of the first series (petroleum cokes) exhibit, at room temperature, much lower paramagnetic susceptibilities than those of the second series (pitch cokes). In this second series, localized centers are observed while none are observed in the first series. Other properties have also been measured (diamagnetic susceptibility, g-factor anisotropy). The results are interpreted, taking into account the presence of intersitital atoms.
