✦ Synopsis
The transient presence of interstitial carbons in the process of transformation of a coke into graphite is deduced from a study of radial distribution function. A peak corresponding to an abnormal interatomic C-C distance of 1.90 .& is observed for the samples heat-treated to 2050°C and to 2100°C. This distance is assigned to interstitial carbons 1.2 A located above or below the hexagonal carbon layers at the center of hexagonal rings. The peak doesn't appear on the radial distribution function obtained either for 1700 or 2500°C. At "low temperature" the interstitials are probably randomly distributed while at 2500°C they are removed by the graphiti~ation process. It is possible to determine from the other peaks observed in the dist~bution function the changes of the C-C distances in the rings and therefore to estimate the distortions within the layers. The measurements shed some light on the mechanism of graphitization.
