On ~tudie par diffractom~trie des rayons X l'effet retardateur du zinc sur l'hydratation des deux principaux constituants du ciment Portland, C3S et C3A. Les r~sultats font appara~tre un retard d'hydratation beaucoup plus important pour le premier que pour le second. Ce retard est dO ~ la formation, autour des grains anhydres, d'un film d'hydroxyde de zinc amorphe qui les isole de la phase aqueuse. L'effet de cette pellicule d~pend de sa permeabilitY. Le d~blocage des r~actions d'hydratation se fait par transformation de l'hydroxyde de zinc en hydroxyzincate de calcium cristallis~ Ca Zn 2 (OH)6 , 2 H 20.
The retarding effect of zinc on the hydration of C3S and C3A , the two principal Portland cement components, has been investigated by X -ray diffraction. The results show that the C3S retardation is more important than that of C3A. This retardation is due to the precipitation of an amorphous layer of zinc hydroxide around the anhydrous grains. The effect of this coating depends on its permeability. The hydration reaction starts again through the transformation of the zinc hydroxide into the crystalline calcium zinc hydroxide Ca Zn 2 (OH) 6 , 2H 20.
