✦ Synopsis

The kinetics of the cationic polymerization of ethylene oxide in nitrobenzene at 25: have been studied using an automatic manometer. The reaction is shown to be of first order with respect to both monomer and initiator; kp is 4.78" 10 2 1 mol i sec 1. Systematic experiments show that, for this reaction, the initiation step is very fast, and that there is no loss of active centres during the process. Experiments performed with successive additions of monomer confirm these results.
