โฆ Synopsis
Ethylene stimulated growth of rice coleoptiles in the dark and after an irradiation with red light. The red-light inhibition of rice-coleoptile growth was more pronounced when only endogenously evolved C2H 4 was involved than it was under Celia-free (C~H 4 removed) or C2tta-saturated (20 ppm Cell a added) conditions.
Ethylene was found to stimulate growth of intact rice eoleoptfles in darkness (Ku et al., 1970). Under continuous irradiation, the growth of intact rice coleoptfles is strongly inhibited by red light, and somewhat reduced by blue and by far-red light ; an inhibitory effect of red light on coleoptfle elongation is caused by a brief low-energy irradiation (Pjon and Furuya, 1967). Since these experiments on light inhibition were carried out in open systems, it has not been known what influence, if any, volatfles exert on the response of rice eoleptfles to light. The present experiment was designed to examine C2H4-light relationships in the growth of intact rice eoleoptfles.
