The title compound, C 20 H 22 O 7 , was prepared by reaction of 4hydroxy-3-methoxybenzaldehyde and 1-chloro-2-(2-chloroethoxy)ethane. Intermolecular C-HÁ Á ÁO hydrogen-bonding contributes to the stability of the structure in the solid state.

The molecule of the title compound, C 16 H 14 O 4 , is nearly planar. A crystallographic centre of symmetry is located at the mid-point of the central C-C bond. The two aromatic rings are parallel to each other. The crystal structure is stabilized by weak intermolecular C-HÁ Á ÁO hydrogen bonds.
