Unrelieved human suffering is terrible. It is for this reason that the alleviation of suffering is the warrant of medicine and its test of adequacy. For many of the very sick patients who populate our hospitals and the chronically ill, it is a test that contemporary medicine fails despite the brilliance of its science and its awesome technological power.
