Details are provided of how to estimate, without extensive computer simulations, the zero-field splitting parameter (D) of the Mn 2 + ion characterized by axial symmetry from forbidden-hyperfine doublet separations in the central sextet of the Mn 2 Γ· EPR spectrum in a polycrystailine sample by the use of an analytic expression derived from the eigenvalues calculated to third order in perturbation.
