โฆ Synopsis
The expected variation of nuclear fissilities throughout the periodic table is examined by considering the competition between fission and neutron and proton emission during the deexcitation of an excited compound nucleus.
Fission barriers and particle binding energies, upon which the competition depends, are evaluated on the basis of the liquid-drop model; nuclear level density parameters are taken proportional to the atomic mass number. The examination indicates that, contrary to what has been supposed previously, the fissilities of elements lighter than about silver should increase with decreasing Z2/A.
