Earlier observations upon the establishment of definitive girdle asymmetry (Swett, '28) resulted in the conclusion that the polarity of the dorsoveiitral axis became irreversibly fixed shortly before the embryo attained stage 39. Some of those experiments were made with grafts consiclerably larger than the conventional (39 somite) limb-rudiment transplant.
