Michel de Montaigne (1533–1592) växte upp på slottet Montaigne i trakten av Bordeaux. Hans familj var av välbeställd överklass, och Michel fick en för den tiden modern uppfostran, han fick lära sig latin som första språk och sattes i goda skolor. Efter juridikstudier gjorde han juridisk och politisk karriär och innehade höga ämbetsmannaposter enligt familjetraditionen. Faderns död innebar större frihet för honom, och 1570 lämnade han sin tjänst "trött på slavtjänst vid domstolar och offentliga ämbeten". Han drog sig tillbaka till sitt slott och började teckna ned sina personliga reflektioner som han kallade essayer och skapade därmed en ny litterär genre.
