β¦ Synopsis
Much current research in ESR involves mollusks. As well as being useful for ESR dating, mollusks often present interesting problems in dosimetry. A number of molluskan species have been dated successfully by ESR. This work will discuss results on a previously unstudied genus, Mercenaria, using samples approx. 100 ka old, from Norfolk, Va (U.S.A.). Extensive comparison dating is available for the deposits, using, for example, uranium series disequilibrium and amino acid racemization. In addition, the work compares several proposed methodologies for determining the accumulated radiation dosage by ESR.

The spectral energy-dependence of the radiation-induced ESR signal has been studied in ovine cortical bone. Crushed bone samples were irradiated using photon beams with effective energies in the range from 0.06 to 6 MeV, and electron beams with mean energies in the range from 2 to 10 MeV. The photon
