✦ Synopsis

In 73 premature infants the blood volume was measured using T-1824, and the red cell volume was determined during the first and second day of life. The red cell volume in relation to body weight varies over a wide range. Since the destruction of red cells acts as the main source of bilirubin, the amount of bilirubin produced should depend on the red cell volume and therefore vary to the same extent. We were surprised to find that there is no distinct relationship between red cell volume and plasma bilirubin. However, in premature infants with a plasma bilirubin value of more than 20 mg~ the red cell volume was slightly higher than the values found in the total group (53.5:65.2 ml/kg).

A large red cell volume may favour a hyperbilirubinaemia (> 20 mg~ although in our material there was no significant correlation between the two values. The possible reasons are discussed.
