✦ Synopsis
The determination of accurate uncertainties in spectroscopic constants obtained from experimental spectra is critical for a correct interpretation of the results. In this paper we examine the validity of using the covariance matrix obtained from a least-squares fitting routine as a means of error estimation. Monte Carlo calculations of simulated spectra are the basis by which the least-squares fitting methods are evaluated. The fitting techniques we examine are combination differences, excited state fitting, and fitting all parameters simultaneously. ๑1993 Academic Press. Inc.
