Volvo's dedication to improving comfort through ergonomic design* was emphasised last month by the eighth annual Volvo Awards for Medical Research all given this year to research teams in the field of back pain. United Kingdom scientists received two of the three ยฃ7000 awards: Dr Gordon Waddell, Orthopaedist at the Western Hospital, Glasgow, for a psychological study leading to the treatment of chronic lower back pain through a programme of exercises: and a team of four researchers from the Orthopaedic Department of the University of Liverpool for developing a series of psychological tests to help predict future back pain problems. The third award went to a pair of Australian researchers in the University of Queensland Department of Anatomy, for opening the way to mathematical models simulating straip on the lower back. *Volvo's pioneering of the adjustable lumbar support for front seat backrests was a direct result of collaboration with the Chalmers Institute of Technology in Sweden.
