The theory of thermodynamic equilibrium for fluid systems is presented in a way that leads directly to the combined conditions of equilibrium and stability in the compact form due to Gibbs, makes clear their connection with dynamical behavior, as embodied in the equations of change, and includes the influence of external body force fields on both equilibrium and stability.
