✦ Synopsis

is demonstmted that in the molecular electrondonor-acceptor system of sym.tetracyanobenzene with pus-xylene, both ground-state and stable cxcitedkate complexes can be formed. Measurements of the decay times of fIuorcsocnce and investigation of the influence of solvent polarity on the fluorescence spectra have revealed the identity of fluorescent states cf complexes of bcth kinds.

Donor-acceptor compounds containing a phenylenediamine electron donor and a naphthalene, a cyanobenzene, or a cyanonaphthalene acceptor were studied. The two chromophores are connected by three different bridging units, consisting of CH 2 groups linked to a semiflexible piperidine or piperazine ring

The hyperfine tensors of the triplet states of several guest donor molecules in naphthaleneitetracyanobenzene host crystals have been measured by EPR s~ctroscopy. From these data the degree of charge transfer (6') in the excited state can be derived. in a straightforward way. Whereas anthracene yieI
