Hydrogenation of carbon dioxide and carbon monoxide on iron catalysts prepared from Fe,(CO), and Fe,(CO),, supported on four activated carbons were studied. The catalysts, prepared and reduced in H, at 673 K for 12 h, were characterized by H, and CO chemisorption and TEM. The catalysts prepared from

✦ Synopsis
High-valence osmium ions (OS'+ or 0s" ) were stabilized on CeOz and Th02, when the initially impregnated cluster OSCAR was decomposed under oxidizing conditions. This is in contrast to the formation of low-valence ions (OS'+ and 0~~') on Al,03. The presence of osmium on Ce02 and Th02 presumably modified their redox properties and created new centers for OF radical anion localiition.
