A rigid peripheral clamp with an annular heater is used to bond layered crystals to grids with a thermoplastic adhesive. The layered crystals are subsequently cleaved with adhesive tape while bonded to the grid. The final layered crystal thin film covering a grid opening is exposed only to room air
