On completion of the Proceedings the Editors feel obliged to record their thanks to a number of people: the authors for their excellent cooperation; the secretaries during the sessions, P. Tanskanen and J. P. Legrand, who carefully recorded the discussions, which were presented in such a form that they could be published with only little editing; the Chairman of the Panel, Tom Gehrels, who succeeded in promoting a lively discussion; the Editors and Publisher of Space Science Reviews, who offered their means of publication for these Proceedings. Although the Proceedings of the Colloquium do not provide a complete review of scientific ballooning, but rather a few examples of the use of balloons in scientific experiments, we sincerely hope that their reading may result in further use of stratospheric balloons as vehicles for Scientific Research.
