The sedimentary record of known natural catastrophic events and anthropogenic activity in an estuarine environment is assessed using sedimentological, chemical and geochronological techniques. Shallow cores collected from intertidal and salt marsh sediments in Ahuriri Estuary, Hawke's Bay, reveal a
