โฆ Synopsis
Data are presented on the distribution of cancer of the stomach in Israel for 1961 to 1963. The malignancies of 1172 Jewish and 33 Arabic patients were diagnosed, yielding an incidence rate of 23.4 per 100,000 in males and 15.0 in females. The incidence was significantly higher in residents of European extraction with a Europe/Africa age-adjusted ratio of I.3:1 and a Europe/Asia ratio of 1.8:l. I n all population groups the incidence of the disease was significantly higher in new immigrants compared to veteran immigrants. A higher proportion of "definite" cases, diagnosed on histopathologic basis, relative to "probable" cases, diagnosed clinically, was observed in males than in females, in younger than in older age groups and in immigrants coming from Europe than in those coming from Asia and Africa. The implications of the findings are discussed.
