✦ Synopsis
Eosinophilic gastroenteropathy (EG) features gastrointestinal symptoms associated with variable eosinophilic infiltration of the gastrointestinal tract, particularly of the stomach and the small intestine. Since the first reported case of EG in 1937,l more than 150 cases have been reported in the literature. We present a case of EG with emphasis on radiologic and especially ultrasonographic findings before and after treatment.
CASE REPORT
A 30-year-old woman presented to one of the university hospitals with the history of diarrhea, nausea, vomiting, weight loss, and abdominal pain of 2 months' duration. Clinical signs and symptoms revealed partial intestinal obstruction, and a right lower quadrant mass was demonstrated on abdominal computed tomography (CT) scan. Surgical exploration showed a conglomerate of thick-walled intestinal loops in the right lower quadrant, and a right hemicolectomy was performed. Histopathologically the surgical specimen revealed marked eosinophilic infiltration of the muscular layer of the terminal ileum and ascending colon with lesser involvement of the mucosa. She was transferred to our hospital for further treatment. On physical examination she again had a palpable right lower quadrant mass that was 10 cm x 10 cm that was immobile. The leukocyte count was 11 x lo3 cells/pL with 9% being eosinophiles.
