β¦ Synopsis
LETTERS
eration was observed only in the superficial area. According to the 73 previously reported cases, the main inflammatory lesions are located in the fascia, and muscle involvement was only observed in half of these patients. These observations suggest that the fascia is damaged primarily, and that muscle involvement may be a secondary event.
Since Shulman reported the first 2 cases of eosinophilic fasciitis in 1974 (Shulman LE: Diffuse fasciitis with hypergammaglobulinemia and eosinophilia: a new syndrome? J Rheumatol [suppl I ] 1:82, 1974), the pathogenesis of this disease has been investigated intensively. We believe autoimmune mechanisms are probably involved in the development of eosinophilic fasciitis.
