✦ Synopsis

The biosynthetic pathways leading to the benzophenanthridine alkalofd, sanguinarine, and the indole alkaloids, ajmaliiine and ajmaline, have been solved at the level of the individual enzymes involved. The cDNA for two of the key enzymes has been cloned and the enzymes subsequently actively expressed in heterologous organisms.
