โฆ Synopsis
This issue's book review column supplements the usual reviews of environmental texts by grizzled scientists with a review of a popular environmental text book by a student. It is one of the Clashing Views series that presents topics in the form of a debate between two advocates. Ms Racine concludes that this format "encourages informed communication so that solutions can be discovered and problems resolved." I am not so sure. Values are two-sided, but, to the extent that environmental controversies are driven by differences in interpretation of scientific evidence, there is a right answer which is unlikely to be obtained by splitting the difference between two extreme positions. However, if this format excites students and starts them thinking about these controversies, I can live with the reduction of complex issues to debater's positions.
