Overall this is a book that salmonid fishery and hatchery managers and researchers will find invaluable. Few will read it cover to cover (I didn't even try), but it will become a well-thumbed reference book -probably more a library book than a necessity for every desk. The tough hard-back binding should withstand many years of institutional use. Well done, AFS -a valuable edition to fisheries management literature.

Previous molecular phylogenies of European cyprinids led to some solid facts and some uncertainties. This study is based on a stretch of more than 1 kb in the mitochondrial control region newly sequenced for 35 European cyprinids and on previous cytochrome b and 16S rDNA data. The trees based on the
Two different mitochondrial genes, the cytochrome b and the 16S rDNA, support the same European cyprinid molecular phylogeny: the most basal subfamily is the paraphyletic Rasborinae, the Cyprininae are monophyletic, the Tincinae and Gobioninae are close to the Cyprininae or more basal lineages but n
The results of toxicological studies are used by a number of government agencies to protect the health of individuals or of ecosystems. Risk assessment is used to provide a rational basis for regulatory decision making. It may even be used in cost-benefit analyses for regulations. In what is called
