Two cases of contact allergy to methylisothiazolinones from slimicides used in pulp and paper mills are described. The first patient worked as a batcher in a paper mill, and he was in charge of pumping slimicides containing methylisothiazolinones. During pumping, the liquid often overflowed, and his

✦ Synopsis
Environment Friendly' has become one of the most popiilar catchphrases of the 1990s and its implications are causing problems f i r many industries (The Economist, 1991a). The problems and response strategies vary from indiistry to industry and probably from country to country. In this study attention is focused on the pulp and paper sector in Europe. Pulp and paper is selected because for a Iong time it has been regarded as one of the most damaging indristrial activities (Zazlatta, 1968). The increasingly popular desire for a greener environment has exposed three pnrticrilar problem areas for the pulp and paper industry: the production process; its supply of raiu materia/s; and ninrketing stratepj (Brown, 1991). Techno!opj and consumer demand are the important ZJariables that are dictating ltozu fast, and to what extent the pulp and paper industry can respond and become more environment friendly.
Pressures on the p u l p and paper industry to irnyroz1e its environmental perfbrnrance arc shown to emanate from three distinct groups. Tlwse environmental pressures have encouraged and are encoiiraging the industry to adopt new technology to itliprow both its prodircfion processes and the quality of its product.
