although it contained only a small section of the many Indian terms that were used, some of which were spelt inconsistently. These points aside, Mukherjee's picture of livelihoods, agriculture and air pollution in the two selected locations should be applauded. The book provides another substantial contribution to peri-urban research, particularly to the burgeoning body of work emerging from the Indian State of Uttar Pradesh where comprehensive research has already been conducted in the peri-urban areas of Aligarh (see Siddiqui, 2000). Mukherjee's book will be of interest to researchers and practitioners alike, particularly to those involved in the field of urban and peri-urban agriculture.
