A natural convection in a square cavity finds considerable interest in thermal engineering applications. However, the use of entropy generation concept enables to identify the optimum conditions for its practical application. Consequently, in the present study, natural convection in a square cavity

β¦ Synopsis
The entropy generation due to heat transfer and friction has been determined in transient state for laminar natural convection by solving numerically the mass, momentum and energy balance equations, using a control volume finiteelement method. The variations of the total entropy generation as function of time for Rayleigh number and irreversibility distribution ratio set at 10 3 6 Ra 6 10 5 and 10 Γ4 6 u 6 10 Γ1 were investigated. The evolution of the maximum of entropy generation with the Rayleigh number is studied. The effect of the irreversibility distribution ratio on the maximum entropy generation and the entropy generation in steady state are analyzed. The irreversibility maps for Rayleigh number set at 10 3 6 Ra 6 10 5 and irreversibility distribution ratio u ΒΌ 10 Γ4 are plotted.

This paper reports the results of an analytical and numerical investigation to determine the effect of internal heat generation on the onset of convection, in a differentially heated shallow fluid layer. The case with the bottom plate at a temperature higher than the top plate mimics the classical R
The problem of initiation of thermal convection in rectangular cavities filled with viscoplastic material is considered. A two-sided asymptotic expansion is combined with numerical modelling in order to obtain an expression for the critical yield number, which is valid for the entire range of the ca
